We use water
With one simple, straightforwardly expressed fact per page and a crisp photo that clearly illustrates the information, these books on water, part of the First Step umbrella series (see the Top 10 list), are solid examples of good nonfiction bookmaking for the very young. The language and syntax are just right for beginning readers, and each book deals with a single, general topic presented through pictures of mostly everyday activities. In We Use Water, for example, children will see themselves and others making ice cubes, washing their hands, fighting fires, and running on the beach. Pictures in both books can also lead to discussions of less familiar ideas: water as a source of electricity, water as snow. Each book closes with some additional facts and a brief glossary. These are new books that live up to the promise of an already first-rate series.
